How to find your LinkSys Router IP

Linksys is a very famous brand manufacturing broadband routers. The company has made its presence felt in many countries across the world. The default IP address for any Linksys broadband router is 192.168.1.1. This default address is set by the manufacturer at the factory. However, you can change the address any time using the router's administrative console.

Default Address

Actually 192.168.1.1 is an IPv4 network address. You will notice that any network router from another manufacturer, local network or even a computer uses this address. However, it is advisable that only one device in the network be set to use this address, in order to avoid any conflict in the network.

Setting the Configuration

You can set the configuration of your Linksys router at any time by following the set of instructions. In order to do the configuration settings, you will have to first connect your computer to the router. You can do this by using a standard CAT5 cable. You can connect your computer to any one of the 4 LAN ports that are situated on the back side of the router. Do not plug the cable to uplink port that is situated next to the power. Once you start your router and your computer, you will see lights flicking on the computer port where the cable is plugged. If you don't see the light, your cable might be damaged.

Noting Network Settings

Write down all of your ISP's network settings that you see on the screen. Some ISPs may require the hostname or the domain name which has to be entered in the DNS settings. Your computer may then request the IP configuration from the DHCP server. Once the information is correct, the router will start acting like a DHCP server and it will manage the configurations of any client on the network. You can click on "Obtain an IP automatically on a network" to get an IP address.

Using Release and Renew

If the IP address displayed is 192.168.1.100, then the router has already got an IP address. If there is any other figure displayed, you can click on the Release and Renew buttons to get the right IP address. In order to configure the router you should open your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and enter the default password which is, password. The LAN IP address is the same address of the IP address of the router. The broadband ISP will use the DHCP to provide IP addresses to the customer. In case you are a DSL user then you might have to check the PPPoE settings.

The WAN Port

Next you should simply plug your WAN port in the router and the address will be obtained automatically. To get a new IP address, click on the DHCP Release and DHCP Renew button on the status page. You should preferably change the password as well and make it a little complicated, with around 8-12 characters.
