A spot beam is a satellite beam which is focused on a relatively small portion of the earths surface. It may require 20-30 typical spot beams to provide coverage of the entire United States. The coverage area of a beam on the Earth is referred to as the footprint. Spot beams are also referred to as narrow beams.
