Ham Radio Software

Ham Radio Software, also known as Amateur Radio Software, refers to computer programs designed exclusively for ham radio equipment. Once thought to be a means of communication between radio enthusiasts, ham radio now coexists with software including data and contest loggers, log books, Morse code tutors, and antenna design aids. In the 21st century there are several software companies that have developed programs specifically for amateur radio enthusiasts. Logging Software: Freedom and...

Arc Transmitter

The arc transmitter is an instrument for converting direct current into Radio Frequency or (RF) energy. Prior to the development of the arc transmitter, wireless communications were built around the spark-gap transmitter which was inefficient (it wasted bandwidth and used up more energy than required), disruptive (the wide range of frequencies that spark-gap transmitters generated caused massive interference to other radio frequencies), and unstable.

The arc transmitter (and later, the...

How Sunspots Affect Radio Reception

In order to understand how sunspots effect radio reception, you need to understand that the light waves and radio waves that the sun emits are both categorized as electromagnetic (EM) radiation. While light waves are visible to the human eye, they are still electromagnetic waves that oscillate. There are many electro magnetic waves, some oscillate very slow and some very fast. The slowest are the long-frequency radio waves. X-rays are some of the fastest EM waves and the light that we see...

RFID Skimmer

Radio-Frequency Identifier (RFID) technology has become really popular because of the various advantages it comes with. However,   such as passports, national identity cards, credit cards etc have become a serious security concern. Two electrical engineering students (Ilan Kirschenbaum and Avishai Wool) from Tel Aviv University wrote a paper titled "How to Build a Low-Cost, Extended-Range RFID Skimmer." The paper demonstrates just how very simple it has become to...

Ham Radio

More than three million people enjoy ham radio hobbies, which is basically amateur radio. These enthusiasts create a network of people that enjoy communicating with one another over different frequencies. However, ham radio operators do use a variety of methods to communicate with one another.

The amateur radio operators are known as Hams, and they communicate with one another for fun, self-improvement, or even public service. These operators communicate by transmitting messages by voice...

Internet Radio

Internet radio is essentially the same as regularly broadcast radio, with a few distinguishing characteristics. Whereas there is a minimal lag time with regular radio because it broadcasts through the air, Internet radio has a lag time of 2.5 to 10 seconds or so, depending on the server. Internet radio is streamed, and so does not involve downloading. You simply log on to the particular site and in it comes.

Receiving the stream is much like listening to your MP3 player, as the format is...

What about Modifying (modding) these Radios?

The best of these radios can be extensively modified by end users. These modifications usually allow greater receive or transmit ranges, but may enable access to an array of possible features.

The absolute best source for radio mod information is http://www.mods.dk

A Yaesu specific modding page is at http://www.icongrp.com/~sllewd/

MCX

MCX is a type of connector developed in the 1980's and used in the microwave transmission range. It carries frequencies of up to 6 GHz and is the second smallest of the subminiature connector families. At approximately 30% smaller than Subminiature B connectors (measuring in at 0.140 inches on the outer diameter of the plug), MCX is designed to completely minimize any leakage at its joints.

The MCX connector is used with a standard coaxial cable and features a snap-on interface in...

Packet Radio

Packet radio is a type of digital data transmission which is most commonly used to link two computers together. It is based on the X.25 protocol used previously by amateur radio enthusiasts. The new generation of this technology as it is used in packet radio is known as the AX.25 data link layer.

Packet radio gets its name from the technology behind it. A type of technology known as packet switching is the primary driving force of packet radio. Packets, or small bits of information, are...

Good Radios for Scanning

Fixed Radio Scanners

My recommendations for general purpose radios for scanning are the PC controlled models.

PC controllers scanning radios give you many more options for playing and are a great bang for your scanning buck. The only downside is that you can't carry these radios around on your belt! Icom PCR-1000 WinRadio Mobile Radio Scanners

To scan while walking around, I recommend either the Uniden BC250D Trunked Radio Scanner, which will enable you to listen to trunked...
