Nokia E62

Nokia E62

Residents in the United States have been waiting quite a long time for Nokia to bring its E series back to the area. However, the wait is finally over with the arrival of the Nokia E62. Similar to its European/global counterpart, also known as the Nokia E61, the E62 is not only powerful, but is a smartphone that offers a wide array of features, and also superb call quality.

The Nokia E62's slim design, as well as its QWERTY keyboard, has it bearing a close resemblance to both the RIM BlackBerry 8700 series, as well as the Motorola Q. It's silver casing is quite attractive, and also makes it a perfect phone for anyone in the business world looking for a sleek and impressive design. It measures a mere 4.6 x 2.7 x 0.5 inches, and weighs in at only 5 ounces. It may be a little bigger than the Motorola Q, and may take a little time to get used to, but it is well worth it. Three buttons are located on the phone's left spine. There, users will find the Volume Up button, the Volume Down button, and also the Voice Record button. However, no buttons are located on the phone's right side, which can make it a little difficult to use with only one hand. The screen located on the E62 measures in at 2.8 inches. Not only is it large, but it is also bright, featuring a 16 million color output and 320 x 240 pixel resolution. Both images and text look wonderful on the screen. And it can also still be easily seen in the brightest of light. If the user so chooses, he or she can adjust both the screen's contrast and backlighting. The screen, however, isn't a touch screen. So potential users may want to keep this fact in mind when shopping for a new mobile phone. But, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. All commands entered into the E62 can be done through the navigation buttons located below the screen, as well as through the complete QWERTY keyboard. The buttons found on the phone are the right and left selection keys, End and Talk buttons, a shortcut to the Menu, a key to launch email, and also a four-way joystick that also operates as the OK key when pressed. All the controls on the phone are space well and are easy to use, even for users with larger fingers.

The Nokia E62, touted as a device for business-oriented users, does not include a camera. However, to make up for this lack of equipment, the E62 does include a mini SD expansion slot. The only thing is that it is located on the left side behind the phone's battery cover. This may seem inconvenient, but users do not necessarily have to remove the entire battery to get to the slot. The phone does come with several accessories, including a USB cable, a mini SD card, an AC adapter, and also reference material.

Users of the Nokia E62 will find that the phone comes with a wide array of features, which is perfect for anyone looking to use it in the corporate world. The phone runs Symbian OS 9.12, a third edition in Series 60, and also comes equipped with complete support for both editing and viewing Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint documents. This is definitely an advantage over the aforementioned Motorola Q. The USB cable can easily be used to transfer files and date from the E62, and those files should offer no trouble when the user attempts to open them. The phone also offers a Screen Export function, which allows the user to display the phone's screen on any compatible projector. The phone works well with Zip Manager and Adobe Reader, and also comes equipped with basic organization tools and PIM applications, including notes, a calendar, a voice recorder, a clock, and also a currency converter. 75 MB of memory come already installed on the E62, although it can be expanded upon hrough use of the mini SD slot. Users can easily send email since the phone supports the Microsoft Exchange Server, IMAP, POP3, and SMTP accounts. Real-time message delivery is possible through various applications, such as Intellisync, BlackBerry Connect, Wireless E-mail, Visto, GoodLink, and Seven Always-On Mail. The small LED located above the phone's screen, as well as a pop-up box, alert the user to any new messages. The phone also features a mobile VPN client that allows users to securely access their corporate server. The E62 can easily work with familiar instant messaging applications, such as AOL and Yahoo, and it is multimedia and text message capable.

The Nokia E62 includes Bluetooth, 3G technology, or UMTS, GSM/GPRS, and infrared. The Bluetooth technology on this phone works beyond hands-free headsets. It can also be used to transfer files, and also dial-up networking, which allows the user to use his or her phone as a modem in order to connect Bluetooth enabled laptops and/or PDAs to the Internet. Although it is called a business phone, the E62 is also great for fun uses, too. There is a good music player that can play RealAudio, MP3, and ACC files. It can also sort the various songs by album, artist, composer, or genre. Playlists can also be created. RealPlayer is compatible with 3GPP and MPEG-4 formats. Even though there is no camera, users can still view BMP, JPEG, GIF, and BNG files in the phone's image viewer. Other features also include speed dial, a speakerphone, and voice commands. It also is able to support VoIP calls. The address book, which can hold as much as the phone's memory allows, has enough room to include an email address, multiple phone numbers, work and home address, a website, etc. for each contact. Contacts can also be paired with a picture for the Caller ID. There is also a web browser that is easy to navigate. A thumbnail image of the entire web page being viewed is available. In addition, users will love that blogs and RSS feeds can be downloaded, pop-up ads can be blocked, sites can be bookmarked, etc.
