Audiovox PPC-6600/6601

The Audiovox PPC 6600 and 6601 are the same model phone, but the 6601 was released for Sprint and the 6600 was released for Verizon. With all the functionality of high-speed CDMA 800 / 1900 data networking, the handheld can keep users connected, whether it’s to the office or to friends and family. But there is more to this small phone than all of the online functions one could ask. It is also loaded with Bluetooth technology, a touch-screen, a camera and camcorder as well as MP3 playability and more. However, in packing so many features, there are quite a few shortcomings to this phone.

The first thing one might notice about this beautiful handheld is its large and vibrant screen. The beautiful touch-screen supports 65K colors (TFT) and 240×320 pixels. The second thing is its sleek and rounded design. The 124×70×19 mm handheld features an internal antenna to accentuate its smoothness and in-hand comfort. The heavy weight of 208g is, however, quite a serious drawback.

The full QWERTY keyboard allows for simple web browsing and navigation as well as text messaging and dialing. It is also fully backlit to ensure easy use in dim-lit settings. The 6600 supports full SMS, EMS and MMS messaging and full chat to keep in touch with contacts from virtually anywhere in the world. Email is supported by POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP to send messages as well as file attachments to co-workers, friends or family members.

The device features the very powerful Pocket Internet Explorer for web browsing, enabling you to access whatever information you need wirelessly. The high-speed data network offers typical download speeds of 300-500 Kbps. You can download additional 240 x 320 pixel wallpapers and screensavers to view on the beautiful screen and customize your handheld further. You can also download MP3s to play on its integrated Windows Media Player as well as bonus Java video games to take full advantage of its J2ME technology. Not only does the 6600 keep you connected from anywhere in the world, but it also provides you with endless hours of entertainment right in the palm of your hand.

The large and vibrant screen is also ideal for viewing your pictures and video filmed with its 0.3 megapixel camera. With full video recording capabilities, you can not only record quick snapshots but also film and play back video clips.

The phone’s Bluetooth capabilities allow you to access almost all the functions using voice commands. It also includes a built-in speakerphone allowing you to make conference calls or go hands-free. Also included in the function-packed phone is a complete daily organizer including a calendar, to-do list, alarm clock and calculator.

And if that wasn’t all, its GPS functions allow you to find directions anywhere in the world, whether you are traveling abroad or locally. This remarkable handheld allows for up to 64 MB of storage though additional SD and MMC memory units are available.

The battery life is not something to talk about. Its 1490 mAh Li-ion battery provides 3.6 hours of talk time and a pathetic 144 hours while on standby.

Pros

Whatever your entertainment or business needs, the Audiovox PPC-6600/6601 has it all:

  • Camera with flash and video recording (the 6601 does not have a camera)
  • MP3 music player
  • Bluetooh wireless technology
  • Large screen
  • 64 MB internal memory
  • 3G support
  • Advanced email capabilities
  • Expansion slot for memory
  • Aesthetically pleasing design
  • Fast processing speed

Cons

Unfortunately, the phone also packs in a number of shortcomings:

  • Terrible battery life
  • Heavy weight of 210g
  • Ringer and speakerphone sound volumes are a bit low
  • Frequent lockups
  • Camera resolution could have been better

Overall

You will be hard-pressed to find another handheld on the market that offers these many features fit into such a small frame while looking so attractive. It has appealed to many a tech-junkie and businessman alike. Before you decide on a purchase, however, make sure you’ve taken a look at the list of shortcomings it has. If more than a few of these cause you concern, it would be better to look elsewhere for a phone.
